Anorexia Nervosa
Nutrition Support in Gainesville:
When Food Rules Start Running Your Life
Anorexia often starts with something that feels reasonable — eating less, eating "healthier," losing weight, changing your body, or trying to improve at a sport.
What we see, again and again, is how quietly those rules can tighten.
Foods get cut.
Rules get stricter.
Exercise becomes something you can't miss, even when you’re hurt or exhausted.
And somewhere in there, the fear of eating more, or gaining weight, becomes louder than almost anything else.
You may already know something is wrong. Or you may believe you're just being disciplined, healthy, careful. And you may not be at all sure you want help. Ambivalence is very common and we can meet you in that.
You don't have to look a certain way for this to be serious.
We work with people across the full range of body sizes who are dealing with the real physical and psychological effects of restriction and malnutrition — regardless of what their body looks like from the outside.
What Anorexia Can Look Like
• Restricting food, skipping meals, or delaying eating
• Cutting out foods or entire food groups
• Eating less than your body needs
• Fear of weight gain
• Frequent thoughts about food, weight, calories, or your body
• Increasingly rigid rules about what feels safe to eat
• Rigid exercise, sometimes continuing through fatigue, illness, or injury
• Distorted beliefs about your weight or shape
• People close to you expressing concern — while you feel certain they're overreacting
You can have all of this without being at a low body weight. That's often diagnosed as atypical anorexia nervosa, and it can be every bit as serious. A diagnosis can be useful, but you don't need one to get help.
How We Work With You
We don't just tell you to eat more. We work through the fear underneath — the fear of food, eating, and weight gain — and we look closely at the beliefs keeping the restriction in place. A lot of ordinary nutrition advice, even from well-meaning professionals, can quietly reinforce disordered eating. Part of our work is helping you sort out what's actually true and useful from what's serving the eating disorder.
That means restoring real nourishment, widening the range of foods that feel okay, matching what you eat to what your body actually needs, and loosening the grip of rigid rules. Some people do well with the structure of a meal plan. For others, rebuilding a connection to hunger, fullness, and other body signals becomes an important part of recovery.
If you've become malnourished or medically unstable, nutritional rehabilitation and weight restoration are a priority. The amount of structure and support you need may shift over time, and we respond to what you actually need rather than following a fixed format.
If You're Worried About Someone You Love
It's often the people closest to someone who notice first: the skipped meals, the rigid rules, the exercise that won't stop. We work with adolescents, teens and their families. You don't have to be certain it's anorexia before you reach out. (You might want to read When Someone You Know Is Suffering from an Eating Disorder.)
If You Need More Support
You may benefit, as many people with anorexia do, from a treatment-team approach, typically including a therapist, dietitian, and physician. You don't need one in place to see us. If you would benefit from a team, we can easily help connect you with skilled providers.
We have been part of the eating disorders treatment community in Gainesville for over three decades, and often work in a team setting. We also have contacts at eating disorder treatment facilities. If a higher level of care is needed, we can help you understand your options and connect with treatment programs.
You Don't Have to Be "Sick Enough"
So many people wait because they don't think it's serious enough, their weight isn't low enough, or someone else has it worse. If eating has become narrower, more fearful, more rigid, or more consuming, it matters. You don't have to wait for it to get worse to reach out.
